EDS Engineers has nominated TWO innovative projects for the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction’s (SAISC) 2024 Steel Awards. The projects are the TSSA Manufacturing Factory and YFPO Paintline Facility, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable and innovative engineering.

NEW PROJECT
IMPOFU Wind Turbine Pre-Cast Factory

Located in Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape, the IMPOFU Wind Turbine Pre-cast Factory is one of our latest engineering projects. The facility will serve as a factory that manufactures keystones for wind turbine towers.

Data Centre, Phase 2 – Durban

EDS Engineers is proud to be a part of the extension of a live Data Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The extension comprises a new data area and two additional generator rooms.

EDS provided civil and structural engineering services such as bulk earthworks, internal services, pavement design, reinforced concrete, and structural steel roof design. Construction work is progressing well, and the project is set to be completed in July 2024.

PROJECT COMPLETED:
UJ Rescue Simulation Centre

Located at the University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein campus, the UJ Rescue Simulation Centre is a unique building and considered a first of its kind. The purpose of the building is to conduct high-risk training simulations and features include a 5.5 meter deep indoor training pool with wave generation, confined spaces trenches and an indoor crane to hoist a helicopter fuselage.

The structure consists of multiple concrete and steel walkway levels encapsulated by a warehouse roof structure. The external facade of the structure has a multi-level external walkway area that provides full access along the perimeter. Full external civil engineering upgrades for additional university parking and walkways complete the new addition to the campus.

Mooikloof external road upgrades

EDS Engineers provided engineering services with the road upgrades at Mooikloof in partnership with Jodan Construction. The new Mooikloof Mega City, by Balwin Properties, will be an exciting addition to the expanding Pretoria East area.

Phase 1 includes the upgrading of four road intersections, with Garsfontein Road and Impala Road the largest part, as well as the entrance to Mega City. Other intersections all along Garsfontein Road include De Villebois Mareuil Drive, Philadelphia Road, and Jollify Main Road.

Traffic and Transportation Engineering services include:

• Traffic impact study.
• Detail design of external roads.
• Tender documentation.
• Construction monitoring.

We are pleased to share that the new Pepkor Warehouse, based in Hammarsdale, KZN has successfully been completed and handed over to the client.

EDS is very proud of the project.  As Structural Engineers, we received the 2023 Steel Award for “Best Project in KZN”. Seeing a project of this magnitude to completion always fills us with joy and thankfulness.

Here is the summary of the project.

• Total covered floor area of 105 770 m² including the main warehouse and canopies.
• Main office space of 5 500 m².
• 4 node offices of 500 m²
• Two underpasses/access tunnels, over 50 m long, to transport personnel below the truck yard space for their safety and unhindered truck movements above.
• Internal double-level mezzanine floors with a total area of 56 000 m².
• 8 m Clear spring height at eaves level.
• 5 m Apex height in the centre of the warehouse.

NEW PROJECT: Beechgate Distribution Centre

The Beechgate Distribution Centre in Amanzimtoti, is one of our latest engineering projects. Located in Southgate Business Park, earthworks for this 25 200 m² warehouse have commenced. The warehouse will serve as a distribution centre and accommodate high racking within the structure.

Fountains View – Student Housing, Tshwane

EDS Engineers provided a complete engineering solution with Structural, Civil and Traffic Engineering services.

The recently completed, multi-storey student housing development in the Tshwane City Centre comprises a nine-storey apartment block. The total floor area of about 9900 m² includes 188 units with 898 beds, communal areas on the ground floor and sports and recreational areas on the property.

Structural Engineering

• Design of reinforced concrete foundations and framing elements.
• Value engineering the transfer level on the first floor to eliminate the need for transfer beams.
• Masonry and soft roof design.

Civil Engineering

• Design of bulk earthworks, stormwater, sewer, water reticulation and paved areas.

South Hills is an integrated residential development located along the Klipriviersberg with views of the Johannesburg CBD skyline, led by the Calgro M3 Group. Various green initiatives and energy-saving technologies are being implemented, such as gas for water heating (geysers) and cooking.

University of Venda Faculty of Health Sciences in Thohoyandou, Limpopo

EDS Engineering was the appointed structural engineers for this modern alteration and addition project of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Venda.

The project entailed the rectification of the original building, as well as the addition of +- 2200m² of usable area. The faculty consists of laboratories, lecture halls, offices, a gymnasium, and other amenities.

Our services included the following:

• Structural design of steelwork, including columns, composite beams and facades.
• Design of reinforced concrete foundations, piles, ground beams and more

PROJECT UPDATE: Castle Gate Mixed-Use Development

Jul 2023

Appointed by Atterbury Property, EDS Engineering is truly proud to be the principal engineers for the upgrading of the external civil services of the Castle Gate Development. The 22nd of July 2023 marked the placement of eight x 70-tonne pre-cast beams for constructing the new bridge on Solomon Mahlangu Drive across the N1 Freeway which consists of five lanes in each direction. As a result, the bridge will alleviate the traffic congestion that has plagued Pretoria East for decades.

The project includes upgrading the Solomon Mahlangu Drive dual carriageway from Boeing Street (at Waterkloof High School) to the R21 Interchange. The works also comprise all internal road upgrades to serve the Castle Gate Development.

A special thanks to the project team: Atterbury Properties, Jodan Construction and Civilcon. It is a pleasure to work with a skilled team.

The full project is estimated to be completed by January 2024.

Despite the recent rain and flooding in Cape Town, this Data Centre development is progressing well. The foundation piling has been completed, and the main building work commenced. We are looking forward to seeing this 50 000m² GBA world-class development completed.

The UJ Rescue Simulation Centre is located at the University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein campus.

EDS Engineers is the Structural and Civil Engineers appointed for this modern, forward-thinking development.

At a completed size of about 1000m², the lower levels of the structure are concrete with a 5-meter-deep wave generation pool which will be used for training simulations of adverse conditions. To suspend the helicopter fuselage, the upper levels are covered by a warehouse roof structure and gantry crane.

It is a unique building that is one of the first of its kind and we are very pleased to be part of this project.

Heading up EDS Town Planning is Hugo Benadie, a Professional Registered Town Planner with over 12 years of experience. Hugo joined the EDS team in February.

We are excited to offer this new service to our clients, thereby expanding on the EDS excellent service offering.

As Structural Engineers, we are incredibly proud of the nearly completed project; it is an outstanding warehouse.

The warehouse footprint area with canopies is +-105 770m², with a mezzanine floor area of +-50 000m², an office area of +-3 000m² and a GBA of +-149 259m².

Structural Engineering included:

• Design of structural steelwork.
• Reinforced concrete foundations and columns.
• Mezzanine structures, underpass structures and staircases.
• Concrete framed office buildings and Tilt-Up walls.
• Large panel fibre-reinforced floors constructed to FM2 tolerance.

Our annual golf day, in partnership with CADCON Steel Construction and Engineering, was held end of last year. We had a great golfing day at the Pretoria Country club with our colleagues and clients – who have now become friends.

Congratulations to Christian de Jager for successfully registering as a Professional Engineer with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa). With a B.Eng Civil degree as well as B.Eng Honors in Structural Engineering, Christian brings more than 6 years of experience to the team. Well done Christian, we are proud to have you as part of the EDS Team.

Capitol Gate – Student housing, Tshwane

Capitol Gate is a new multi-storey student housing development in the Tshwane City Centre.

With a total floor area of about 9 900 m², the development consists of a nine-storey apartment block, housing 810 beds with communal areas on the ground floor and recreational areas on the roof level.

EDS Engineers is proud to be part of this development as the appointed Structural, Civil, and Traffic engineers, providing a complete engineering solution.

Structural

Services include the design of reinforced concrete foundations and framing elements.
Specialised “Deep” beams within the shear walls were used to eliminate the need for transfer beams at the first-floor level, providing a flush floor soffit. Services also include masonry and soft roof design.

Civil

Services include the design of bulk earthworks, stormwater, sewer, water reticulation, and paved areas. The project is completed with external road upgrades and the addition of a bus lay-by.

Traffic

Traffic impact assessments, site traffic assessments, and parking studies were conducted. In line with the latest policies and plans, this development aims to curb private vehicle use in the city. Capitol Gate promotes sustainability and integration of public transport services, with the property located across from a Gautrain station and a Metrorail station.

Respublica Paton House – Pietermaritzburg

Situated at 29 Golf Road in Pietermaritzburg, Respublica Paton House is a newly built student residential building, providing more than 485 beds for students attending the nearby university.

EDS Engineers is the appointed Structural and Civil Engineers for this project consisting of 7 separate constructed multistorey buildings. The premise includes modern amenities like a swimming pool, braai area and gym facilities.

Another successful project due for completion in partnership with Respublica.

The Greenery Convenience Centre – Polokwane

EDS Engineers is excited to announce the breaking of ground for The Greenery Convenience Centre in Polokwane. This new centre comprises 10 000 m² of a gross leasable area spanning across the 30 000 m² site.

Offering our Structural, Civil and Traffic Engineering services, this centre comprises a single-level trading floor with line shops and anchor tenants. Together with an upper-floor medical facility and lower-ground parking, the centre will be an asset of convenience for the town.

𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡: Services include the design of reinforced concrete foundations and framing elements with soft roofs of structural steel and more.

𝘾𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙡: Services include the design of bulk earthworks, stormwater, sewer, water reticulation, paved areas, and hardstand areas.

YFPO: Yanfeng and Plastic Omnium manufacturing facility

The Yanfeng manufacturing facility is our featured project for the month. EDS Engineers is appointed as Structural and Civil Engineers for this +/- 28 000 m² project located in Rosslyn, Pretoria. The facility will consist of over-head cranes and tank pits requiring intricate coordination by a highly specialised consultant team.

Other structural engineering includes the design of steelwork, reinforced concrete foundations, framed ancillary buildings, conveyor trenches, loading docks and more.
Civil engineering includes the design of stormwater, sewer, water reticulation, paved areas, hardstand areas and loading yard areas.

Meet the Directors: Hergen Fekken

Hergen is one of the directors at EDS Engineers. Boasting a Structural Engineering degree and Honours degree from the University of Pretoria, he has 27 years’ experience in the industry. Hergen joined EDS Engineers in 1993 freshly out of university and forms part of the team driving the company’s vision for success and excellent service.

When not working, Hergen is a genuine petrol head and loves rally car racing. He won the SA Rally Drivers Championship in 2008 and 2009.

All the directors, senior associates and associates at EDS Engineers are professionally registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The directors are actively involved in all projects, from concept through to design and execution.
